"The city of salvation" - Sozopol is located south of Bourgas on two rocky peninsulae and three islands, still keeping tracks of its millennia history. In 610 BC. myelitis Greeks settled there and named the town after their god of Apollo - Apollonia Pontica. Later the city was named Sozopol (savior) and was inhabited continuously for over 2600 years. Sozopol will charm you not only with unique architectural ensembles of houses and traces of a Thracian sanctuary and a Greek temple, but with its calmness and spirituality. In one of the churches, St.George, the part of the Crussifix and sacred relics of St.Andreus and St.John the Baptist are exibited. These rare Christian relics, found during excavation works at the closest island of St.John, are the reason the city to be called now “the Bulgarian Jerussalem”.
